Institute tasked to rethink transport system

YANGPU District yesterday unveiled a design and innovation research institute with Tongji University to focus on the city’s future transport system.
The Shanghai International Design and Innovation Research Institute aimed to develop a new “ecological transport system” to help to resolve the city’s traffic congestion, said Zhou Ping, executive director of the institute.
“The future transport system will not only rely on subway and buses but also some innovative means of transportation such as the current popular bike-sharing services.”
The institute would research how to meet demands of local residents to improve urban conditions. It would also carry out innovative research on the new technology, media and telecom industries, Zhou added.
It would cooperate with renowned design schools from other local universities including Donghua University, East China University of Science and Technology, and Shanghai University of Engineering Science.
“The institute will combine the visual and designing arts with modern technologies to solve the urban development problems and help to develop Shanghai into a global innovation hub,” said Jiang Hong, a counsel with Shanghai Education Commission.
The institute would also help local enterprises in traditional industries to transform and take advantage of new development trends, Zhou said. Many large-scale enterprises had reached cooperative agreement with the institute, he added.
Numerous local universities and government bodies have established innovation research institutes to facilitate Shanghai’s ambition to become an innovation center in science and technology.
Design and innovation had become a key industry to Yangpu, with a 37 billion yuan (US$5.4 billion) production value to the district government in 2016, said Xie Jiangang, director of Yangpu yesterday.
