Intern jailed after ‘surgeon scam’

AN intern who impersonated a surgeon and demanded thousands of yuan from patients has been jailed for 10 months for fraud.

Jing’an District People’s Court said the intern, surnamed Chen, worked in the anesthesiology department of a local general hospital, whose name wasn’t disclosed.

Between late April and early May, he used the name and password of the head of the department to gain access to medical treatment records and surgery schedules.

Chen contacted families of patients through WeChat and claimed he was the surgeon for their relatives. He then asked for money from them, claiming this would encourage him do his best in the surgery.

As the families were afraid of the consequences if “the surgeon” behaved carelessly when operating, they all paid up.

It wasn’t revealed how many people were cheated, but over the period, he defrauded 43,000 yuan (US$6,455) from the families.

Once Chen was paid off, he cut off all contact with his victims, causing some of the families to suspect him and they reported him to the police. Chen was arrested on May 8, and admitted guilt.

As he had returned his ill-gotten gains, he received a lighter sentence. He was also fined 6,000 yuan.
