It’s volunteering time for city’s 10th graders

FOR 53,000 10th graders of local high schools, there will be no summer vacation this year.

Instead, they are being roped in for compulsory volunteer work, Shanghai education authorities said yesterday.

These 10th-graders must work at least 90 days as volunteers during their three years in high school, an experience that is crucial for them to graduate.

More than 1,000 museums, libraries, stadiums and other venues have offered more than 60,000 voluntary posts for the students, said Zou Hong, secretary general of Shanghai Adolescent Students’ Joint Office of Extracurricular Activity.

As volunteers, the students will guide visitors at museums, or set up exhibitions, teach younger students, provide community services or do other meaningful tasks assigned to them. The volunteer work is expected to enrich their personal experiences and improve their practical abilities.

The city decided earlier this year that 10th graders and high school students will have to take part in social activities for at least 90 days before they graduate. It includes 60 hours of volunteer work besides military training, agricultural work, social survey and other events.

Their participation and performance in social activities will be evaluated later. From 2017, local universities will take the records of social activities into consideration during enrollment.

“This is the first year that we are arranging volunteer activities for high school students,” Zhu said. “Summer vacation is a good opportunity for them to take part in the programs as they have more leisure time. But we also encourage them to attend voluntary events on weekends or after class on school days.

“The current available opportunities is good enough for the 53,000 students,” she added. “We need to explore more opportunities because more 10th graders will come through and more posts will be needed.”

Meanwhile, the summer daycare centers run by the city’s youth commission will offer 3,000 positions for high school students for the first time this year.

The education commission said it will continue to encourage students to visit museums, libraries, galleries, parks, as well as science and technology museums during the holidays to enrich their life, rather than just focus on academic studies and going to cram schools. It will give “family passports” to students to visit 61 venues for free while their parents can enjoy 50 percent discounts on tickets.
