Jail for 5 in cabbie attack over dirty paws
FIVE young people who beat up a taxi driver because he refused to have a pet dog in his cab received prison sentences yesterday.
The five defendants, aged between 16 and 21, including three minors, were given sentences ranging from eight months to one year by Putuo District People's Court.
The youngest boy, surnamed Liu, took his girlfriend for a meal with friends on November 1 last year. His girlfriend brought her pet golden retriever. After dinner, Liu stopped a cab and put the dog in the vehicle without asking the driver. Seeing the dog's paws had stained his seat covers, the driver refused the fare.
Liu and four friends pursued the taxi on mopeds. They forced it to stop, kicked in its windows, dragged out the driver and beat him, leaving him with four broken ribs.
The court ruled that the five defendants had disturbed public order.
