Jail for airport bus theft pair
TWO thieves who stole 10,000 yuan (US$1,460) and US$20,000 cash during a shuttle bus journey between the city's two airports were jailed yesterday by the Jing'an District People's Court.
Yue Yong, who had previous convictions, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined 100,000 yuan. Pan Douhai was jailed for eight years and fined 80,000 yuan.
Yue and Pan, both from Henan Province, decided to target the shuttle bus between Hongqiao Airport and Pudong International Airport because it didn't have a conductor and there were no stops along the route.
"Those who can afford to take the plane are usually rich and carry much money," the two told police.
Last October, they went to Hongqiao Airport and got on a bus to the Pudong airport. Yue spotted a brown bag on the rack and they sat behind the bag's owner.
Yue saw that the passenger, surnamed Yang, was busy sending messages on his cell phone.
Yang didn't notice Yue stand up, open the bag and remove two envelopes. One contained 10,000 yuan and another had US$20,000.
When the bus arrived at Pudong airport, the two made off in a taxi. They exchanged the US dollars for 137,084 yuan from a scalper near Shanghai Railway Station and escaped to their hometown after dividing the money.
Yang found his money missing after he got off the bus and called the police.
The pair had been caught in the act by a security camera on the bus and police tracked them down in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, two weeks later, where they were arrested.
