Jinshan City Beach to charge admission

THE Jinshan City Beach will charge admission when it opens on June 1, a measure intended to improve crowd control.

The beach was free last year, attracting up to 38,000 people on peak days. But big crowds meant long queues in the scorching heat outside, which led to fences being damaged.

In the changing facilities, showers and lockers were damaged. There were also reports of people swimming outside designated areas.

Just several days after opening, the beach announced it would close so the facilities could be repaired.

Beachgoers this year will be charged between 10 yuan (US$1.61) and 50 yuan depending on when they go.

The beach’s east and west swimming areas will open on June 20.

The west area will be expanded by about 10,000 square meters, and the east area will stay open until 8:30pm for those who feel like a dip after dinner.

Highlights this year include an international beer festival featuring German snacks from June 1 to June 11, sand sculptures, fireworks, live music and volleyball.

The Bihaijinsha Beach in Fengxian District, another big beach in the city, charges 50 yuan per person.
