Jinshan farmers compensated

The Jinshan District farmers have received dead pig subsidies totaling 2.6 million yuan (US$424,580), officials said yesterday.

Last year, 32,445 dead pigs were collected from Jinshan District and disposed safely. The subsidy for each dead pig was 80 yuan to make up for the losses, according to a national policy.

Jinshan District produces about 301,500 pigs every year, accounting for 11.1 percent of all the locally produced pigs.

In March, more than 10,000 dead pigs were retrieved from the Huangpu River. They were suspected to be coming from Jiaxing City in neighboring Zhejiang Province where farmers said they did not get subsidies and so dumped the pig corpses into the river.
