Judges rule 80,000 yuan in bump-on-subway injury

AN appeals court has ordered a Metro passenger to pay nearly 80,000 yuan (US$11,713) in compensation to a 75-year-old woman because she bumped into the woman when she was getting off a crowded train, causing a head injury.

The final verdict made by the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court reduced the compensation owed by the passenger surnamed Qian by more than 30,000 yuan, compared with the verdict in the original trial. Judges said the victim surnamed Shen should have foreseen the risk in such a crowded train.

At about 8am on December 4 last year, Shen took Metro Line 3 with her two daughters. When the train arrived at the Hongkou Football Stadium Station, Qian got off and bumped into Shen who was at the door.

Shen fell down with her head hitting the platform.

The injury caused Shen to suffer mental effects and she couldn't take care of herself in daily life, the court heard.
