Kidnap bid chauffeur sent to prison

A CHAUFFEUR was sentenced to 11 years in prison for kidnapping his Singaporean employer's children, said the Minhang District People's Court yesterday.

Shen Guanghui, a Songjiang District native, started work for the family in May. At the time, his employer, whom the court referred to only as Chiang, thought that Shen was honest because he had a "good-natured" face.

However, 43-year-old Shen had once served a seven-year jail sentence for rape.

When he took the job, Shen had large gambling debts, the court heard.

After working as Chiang's chauffeur for around a month, Shen hatched the kidnap plot, assisted by a friend, Tang Haijun. He abducted Chiang's son and daughter while driving them to school on June 25.

Shen demanded an 80,000 yuan (US$6,960) ransom from Chiang, who dropped off money in two transactions, having first informed police.

After the second sum was paid, Shen released Chiang's children. However, police had been monitoring the situation and Shen and Tang were arrested the same day.

In addition to a jail sentence, Shen was also fined 20,000 yuan.

Tang was sentenced to seven years in jail and fined 10,000 yuan.
