Kidnapper sentenced to 10 years in jail
A MAN who kidnapped his friend's five-year-old son and demanded over 500,000 yuan (US$81,400) as ransom was sentenced to 10 years in prison, Minhang District People's Court said yesterday.
Prosecutors said the suspect, surnamed Zhou, was a business partner of the boy's father. Zhou told the boy that he would take him to play outside on March 25 in Huacao Town.
He asked the boy to get into his car and called his father and asked for a 508,000-yuan ransom.
After he got the money the next day, he released the boy in Huaxin Town in Qingpu District.
Zhou told the court that he needed the money to settle his gambling debts and had never wanted to hurt the boy.
Zhou has returned most of the ransom money to the boy's family, and will pay the rest later.
