Kidney-Transplant Plot Goes Awry
Three men with apparent plans for an illegal business involving kidney donations were sentenced to jail for up to two and a half years for illegal detention, a Shanghai court said yesterday.
The three, Fang Guang, Yang Didi and Qiao Hailong, all non-locals, put up Internet advertisements in June 2009, promising to pay for kidney donations. They successfully attracted two victims about four months later.
They then held the two in villages in suburban Jinshan District, taking away their ID cards and mobile phones, until the victims were rescued by police two months later, said the court.
No organs were taken.
Both Fang and Qiao received jail terms of two years and six months, and Yang must serve two years. The three pleaded guilty on the illegal detention charges.
