Knife attack victim treated in hospital, suspect held

A WOMAN who was stabbed by a handbag thief in the early hours of yesterday morning is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery, thepaper.cn reported yesterday.

A man is helping police with their enquiries, the report said.

The 23-year-old victim, surnamed Wang, is being treated at Shanghai No. 10 People’s Hospital for multiple knife wounds, though her condition is not critical, the hospital told Shanghai Daily.

The stabbing happened shortly after midnight as Wang was walking home through her residential complex on Yanchang Road in Zhabei District, police said.

Footage taken from a surveillance camera showed a man following her before attacking her with a knife and running away with her handbag, which contained a few hundred yuan.

Despite her injuries, Wang was able to call a friend, surnamed Huang, who had dropped her off at the compound minutes earlier.

Huang drove back to be with Wang and alerted her parents and the emergency services, the report said.

After studying the surveillance footage, police identified the suspect and detained him at an Internet cafe in Hongkou District yesterday morning, the report said, adding that the knife used in the attack was recovered at the scene.
