Knife victim wins compensation from family

A MAN whose finger was sliced off by a schizophrenia patient while out shopping has won 110,000 yuan (US$16,210) compensation from the attacker's family and Shanghai First Provisions Co where the tragedy happened.

Huangpu District People's Court ruled yesterday that the mental patient surnamed Zhang has no criminal liability because of his schizophrenia, according to China News Service today.

His parents, who failed to control their son, must pay 84,000 yuan to compensate the victim surnamed Jiang, the report said.

Jiang also sued the shop where the knife attack happened last July. The court said the company has no liability, yet it allowed the company to give 30,000 yuan to Jiang on compassionate grounds.

The company said one of its security guards was hurt trying to stop Zhang's knife attack. The company also paid 2,300 yuan for Jiang's emergency treatment.
