‘Kobe beef’ bought from Dalian
THE “Kobe beef” that was served at the five-star Waldorf Astoria Shanghai hotel on the Bund during a wedding banquet earlier this month was not from Japan but Dalian in Liaoning Province, officials from the Huangpu market supervision bureau said yesterday.
Japanese Kobe beef has been banned in China since 2001 during the height of the mad cow disease.
About 45 guests who attended the wedding ceremony at the hotel on March 1 were down with suspected food poisoning with 12 people, including the bridegroom, requiring hospital treatment.
The couple blamed a dish listed as Kobe beef and fried mushroom for the food poisoning. They filed a complaint with the local FDA on March 7. The Huangpu District authorities said they were still investigating the case.
