Landlord kills tenant then takes own life

A LANDLORD killed one tenant and injured another before committing suicide in Putuo District early yesterday morning, police said.

The homeowner, surnamed Huang, who was in his 50s, fatally stabbed a man surnamed Wen and injured a woman surnamed Xu, who is in her 20s.

Police said tenants Wen and Xu, who were a couple, had been arguing with Huang beforehand.

Wen staggered out of the third-floor apartment in a complex in Tongchuan Road but died on the first floor.

Xu’s injuries were not life-threatening and she was said to be in stable condition last night.

After the attacks, Huang took his own life in his apartment, said police.

He was found dead there about 2am.

Neighbors said they heard noises from the apartment around midnight.

Wen had managed to walk down to the first floor, leaving a trail of blood on the stairs, before collapsing.

Neighbors living downstairs said Huang had a long history of drug use.

Strangers were frequently seen gathering at his home, making a lot of noise and sometimes fighting.

The neighbors said the disturbance was so bad that they had considered moving.

According to staff with the residential committee, Huang had just retired and received a pension of 3,000 yuan (US$ 492) per month.

He rented out a room for extra cash following the death of his mother.

Police said the case is still being investigated.
