Despite the huge cost to make them, most of the lanterns used during this year’s Lantern Festival will be destroyed. Yuyuan Garden said it began disposing of its lanterns yesterday. Some will go on display in a tourism zone in Jinshan District, but the majority will be thrown away. Experts said most of the lanterns are made for a special purpose so there is little point in keeping them for future use, and they are too big for anyone to keep.
