Learning craft of sharing knowledge
DOZENS of the city’s Chinese traditional art craftspeople finished their first cross-disciplinary university workshop yesterday.
Over 300 pieces of work, including embroidery, ceramics and paintings, resulting from the one-month program, will be feature at exhibition at the College of Find Arts of Shanghai University until Friday.
“The purpose of the program was to bring our traditional craftsmen one step closer to a modern mentality and integrated skills,” Wang Dawei, Dean of the college, told Shanghai Daily.
Within the framework of a nationwide government-college collaboration in training inheritors of China’s intangible cultural heritage, 68 craftspeople were enrolled in the workshop. This connected them with professors and experts in the field of art, aesthetics, branding and even intellectual property protection.
“We witnessed the possibility that traditional arts can be reborn in modern milieu when it becomes a part of our daily life and, of course, a beautifying factor,” said Zhang Jinlu, a 29-year-old Suzhou embroidery and silk work designer based in Shanghai, who created a silk embroidery cushion during the workshop.
Zhang said time spent with craftspeople from different fields also inspired her to advise her employer to push open the design process and share knowledge.
“Somehow many craftsmen of traditional arts tend to be protective about their techniques, but sharing with others will eventually help all of us spot more opportunities,” she said.
The government paid for the workshops and for the accommodation costs of the participants at the university, said officials.
A total of 236 items of intangible cultural heritage in Shanghai have to date been approved by the local cultural authorities.
