Lottery pumps cash into public welfare

WELFARE lottery has made tremendous contribution to China's welfare programs in the past five years, the Shanghai Welfare Lottery Center said today.

Apart from traditional programs funded with lottery proceeds, new programs, such as stray children's aid, have been developed. About 200 million yuan (US$30 million) has been invested to run caring centers for stray children in more than 90 percent of cities in the country, officials said.

Another new program for the improvement of community facilities has absorbed more than 130 million yuan for building fitness facilities and canteens for old folks in more than 3,000 communities nationwide, officials said.

They added that welfare lottery will continue to finance the public welfare programs in the next five years with a focus on the needs of seniors and children.

By the end of November, China's lottery sales had totaled more than 500 billion yuan since it first started in 1987, said the Shanghai Welfare Lottery Center.
