Love leads to 'accident' and then compensation
A WOMAN driver has been ordered to pay 184 yuan (US$28.30) in compensation to a bicycle rider over a traffic accident. But the cause of the accident was a 10-year saga of unrequited love, with the man stalking and harassing the woman for years.
The woman, identified as Yi, tried to stop the admirer surnamed Ye with her car when she found he was following her again on a bike. She dashed into the bike.
Judges of the Jing'an District People's Court said they had no right to stop the man from following the woman but his behavior was immoral.
Ye insisted he was not at fault as he loved her and was just looking at her from a distance of 10 meters.
Ye and Yi used to be colleagues. Ye had courted the good-looking woman but was refused. After Ye left the company in 2003, he still couldn't forget Yi. He often followed Yi on his bike or waited outside the company and sometimes took her photos from a distance. So obsessed was Ye with stalking her that he didn't even look for a job even though the woman soon got married and had a child.
"I couldn't help visiting her every two or three days. It has lasted for about 10 years and I am still single," Ye said.
The woman, however, thought it was harassment. She said she'd moved home and changed driving routes after work. But Ye would always track her. He finally found a job in the office building where Yi worked so that he could see her every day.
Besides, Ye also sent harassing messages, with one such message proclaiming: "I will wait for you. I will marry you even if you turn old."
On the night of August 25, 2010, Yi again found Ye following her on his bike and taking photos. She called police and tried to stop him by driving the car toward him.
The bike was destroyed in the collision. Ye later sued for compensation.
