Mall to pay for crushed hand

THE operator of a shopping center has been ordered to pay 171,000 yuan (US$27,000) in compensation to the family of a 4-year-old girl whose hand was crushed in an escalator accident at a mall.

The incident happened on July 31 last year when the child, identified as Xiao Min, was playing at the New Xingwang International Clothes City in Hongkou, where her father owns a shop.

While riding an escalator unattended, the girl fell and jammed her hand between the handrail and the footplate. A member of the public pressed the emergency stop and the child was later freed by firefighters called to the scene.

After spending 84,000 yuan on medical treatment to repair the damaged hand, Xiao’s parents sued the operator of the mall for dereliction of duty.

The Hongkou District People’s Court ruled yesterday that the company, which was not named, was partly to blame for the accident and ordered it to pay compensation of 171,000 yuan. However, it said also that the parents should not have allowed their child to ride an escalator unattended.
