Man charged in charity thefts

A MAN was charged with larceny for alleging stealing seven donation boxes from banks.

The money inside the boxes totaled more than 3,000 yuan (US$441), Changning District prosecutors said.

The banks collect the money in the donation boxes and then give it to a charity foundation.

Prosecutors said the case showed that the donation boxes aren't watched very closely.

The suspect Liu Feng, a 23-year-old Shandong Province native, was unable to find a job in Shanghai after arriving at the end of last year.

He went to a bank to withdraw money one day early this year and was surprised the account only had several hundred yuan remaining, prosecutors said.

When he saw the donation box, he thought stealing it was a good way to get some quick money, prosecutors said.

A few days later he walked into another bank on Xietu Road and stole a donation box, wrapping it in a coat before walking out.

The box contained more than 400 yuan in cash and some foreign currencies, according to prosecutors.

In the following two months, he allegedly stole six other donation boxes.

He usually selected busy banks where security guards didn't pay much attention to the donation boxes, prosecutors said.
