Man charged in wife's death
A MAN who beat his wife to death because he suspected she had an affair has been arrested on a manslaughter charge, Pudong New Area prosecutors said yesterday.
Wang Ming, a private store owner, surrendered to police and told them he beat his wife several times after he suspected she had an affair, prosecutors said.
Wang told police he had lived in harmony with his wife and their business ran smoothly.
Things changed when he received a call from his niece on July 3. Wang's niece, who is about 30 years old, said she found her husband's mobile phone had some ambiguous messages from Wang's wife.
Wang then confirmed the messages by checking his wife's phone.
Prosecutors didn't disclose details of the messages.
Wang's wife denied the "affair" when he asked about it. But he believed his wife was cheating, Wang told prosecutors.
He then drove his wife out that night and hit her legs with a baseball bat after he parked the car near a supermarket, prosecutors said.
The next morning when Wang was alone with his wife at home on Dongsanliqiao Road, he beat her again with the baseball bat and whipped her with a leather belt, prosecutors said.
He didn't stop until her lip had turned black and she no longer responded to the beating, prosecutors said.
When paramedics arrived, the woman was already dead.
Wang surrendered himself to police two days later.
