Man detained over US$160 phone line scam
A MAN in Fengxian District was caught for allegedly using other people’s telephone numbers to charge his game accounts, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Min, allegedly disconnected more than 10 telephone cables in several neighborhoods and connected them to his own phone, police said.
He then rang a call center that allows people to charge their game accounts via their phone bills, police said.
Some victims complained to police after receiving larger than normal phone bills, they said.
The man cheated people out of at least 1,000 yuan (US$160), police said.
Such cases often take place in old neighborhoods where telephone cables are exposed and easily rigged, they said.
The alleged suspect told police that he learned the technique of cutting off and reconnecting telephone cables from the Internet.
