Man gets 13 years for robbery
A MAN who helped steal a woman's sedan and cell phone in the underground garage of a Carrefour outlet was sentenced to 13 years in prison yesterday.
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said Li Zhong, 29, of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, was so severely punished because he and his accomplice used violence to rob the victim and the stolen sedan was valuable.
The accomplice, Han Yuefeng, is at large, having driven away in the car.
On the night of July 9, the duo went to the Carrefour market in Minhang District to shop. After shopping, they ate some bread in the underground garage, when they saw the victim surnamed, Gu, drive a black Toyota in.
"The woman went for shopping and Han suggested robbing her. I agreed since I didn't have much money," Li told the court at a hearing yesterday.
When Gu came back and started the engine, the duo got on the car separately from both sides of the car. They dragged the woman by the hair and pushed her to the back seat.
The victim testified that Han pointed at her head with a thing like a gun, but Li denied that.
Han then drove the car out of the garage and Li was in charge of controlling the victim on the back seat.
The victim told the police that the duo required her to call her father for 200,000 yuan (US$29,287) on the way.
Han drove the car to Songjiang District and threw the victim on the road, tying her hands and legs.
The two robbers got separated, and Li was caught by police who responded to a report of the robbery after Gu freed herself.
Just more than a month later, on August 27, another woman, who drove a Mercedes-Benz, was kidnapped in the Carrefour Gubei parking lot.
The alleged kidnappers demanded 6 million yuan in ransom from the victim's husband.
The four suspects haven't received a court trial so far.
