Man gets 30 months for scratching 11 cars at night
A 19-YEAR-OLD man who vented his anger by scratching at least 11 cars with keys and stones near Xujiahui was given two years and six months in prison with a 30-month reprieve for causing a disturbance on purpose, the Xuhui District People's Court ruled yesterday.
The man, surnamed Wu, a migrant worker, said he scratched only cars parked in a residential complex on Guiyi Road because he thought one of the cars had knocked him down on July 8. He said he couldn't recall the car's look or its plate since he was drunk.
"I saw the car driving into the complex. I was in a terrible mood because I just quarreled with my father and was hit by a car," Wu said. He scratched several cars that day and returned to scratch more in the next three months.
"I felt a pleasant sensation when scratching the cars and all my bad feelings were gone," Wu said.
Wu confessed that he vandalized 20 cars, but there was evidence to prove only that he damaged 11, including Toyotas, Mazdas and Volkswagens.
The owners didn't realize the scratches were the work of a vandal until September 3, when many found their cars damaged and asked to see surveillance video. Police were called.
Damages totaled 25,000 yuan (US$4,010), the court said.
