Local man gets death for scalding child

A MAN who poured boiling water on a 1-year-old boy in an act of revenge against his parents, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for causing intentional injury, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said yesterday.

The boy, who was then 16 months old, suffered 35 percent burns on his head, face, neck, trunk and upper limbs.

The 26-year-old man, Lin Feng, had rented out his property to a couple, Li Yong and his wife Chen Jie.

Li told Shanghai Daily yesterday that Lin would always visit his wife when he was away at work and told her dirty jokes.

On April 7 last year, Lin asked Chen Jie to buy him breakfast which she refused. Angry at the refusal and not having made much headway with her, he asked Chen to vacate the place immediately.

At 2pm the same day, Chen caught Lin trying to sell Li’s electric bike. She ran down and seized the bike. Lin rushed up and locked Chen out of the room with the baby inside.

He then poured boiling water on the sleeping child.

Lin’s lawyer argued he was suffering from mental disorder. A psychiatric evaluation confirmed that Lin had a schizotypal personality disorder. The lawyer told the court that Lin’s family had also paid about 170,000 yuan for the child’s medical treatment but the court was not impressed.

Both Lin and his lawyer tried to pin some of the blame on the child’s parents, saying they should have taken proper care of the baby and not left him alone at home.

The court disregarded the psychiatric report and said he was fully capable of making a judgement and declared him fit to stand trial.

The judge, Jiang Hongwei, told Shanghai Daily that Lin knew what he did was against the law and his motive was to seek revenge against the couple. He intentionally hurt the child and initially tried to hide the truth during interrogation.

Li told Shanghai Daily that the treatment is expected to cost him about 1.7 million yuan. He did not press for compensation as Lin did not own the property any more. “His mother, who lived abroad, sold the place we were living for 2.4 million yuan, but she did not pay us anything,” Li said.

Lin had discontinued his studies and was staying in the flat which was owned by his mother. He did not file an appeal yesterday.
