Man gives donated money to city charity
QIN Xiaoliang, a migrant worker who lost his money and gained widespread attention before the Spring Festival, gave the cash he received from public donations to Shanghai charity yesterday.
Qin, a 29-year-old courier, donated 14,650 yuan (US$2,348) to the Changning District branch of the Shanghai Charity Fund.
The courier, carrying his nine-year-old daughter with him yesterday after returning from his hometown in Anhui Province, said he was happy to "help society." And he once again thanked all those who donated money to him.
Fang Huifang, the deputy chief with the charity branch, said the money will be used to help poor families and handicapped people in Shanghai. "Shanghai people are good, you are also good," Fang said to Qin. Qin smiled and hugged his daughter.
Pictures of Qin with tears in his eyes when standing on the road raised a big discussion online. Qin lost 17,600 yuan when riding his scooter on the way to a bank on February 3 in Changning District. Most of the money scattered along the street and sidewalks. Most of it was picked up by passers-by who disappeared quickly. He said the money was going to be used to "renovate the old house back home."
The pictures of Qin went viral online, and many criticized those who took the money. Soon people started donating money to Qin.
Some of those who had taken the scattered money handed it over to police after media exposure and a police investigation. About 8,400 yuan was recovered.
Qin's company gave him the outstanding 9,200 yuan yesterday after learning of the incident. He said he didn't feel comfortable keeping the money donated by the public and thus gave it to the charity.
Qin has been in Shanghai for nine years. He also works in a slaughter house at night to support his family.
His courier salary is about 3,600 yuan per month.
