Man goes missing on receiving cancer news
POLICE are looking for a 64-year-old man who disappeared from his home last week after finding out he had cancer.
The man, identified only by his surname Sun, left his home in Fengxian District about 9am last Tuesday after telling his wife he was going for a walk and would be back for lunch. Shortly before he left, he had received a hospital report saying he had pancreatic cancer and needed immediate treatment, police said.
When no one heard from Sun for several days, his daughter called the police.
She also posted an appeal on WeChat and through that learned that her father had been spotted at a bus stop in Chongming County the day after he left home.
The woman’s uncle also received a text from Sun telling him to look at a message he’d left on an old phone at his home. In the message, Sun wrote that he didn’t want to be a burden on his family and had left them so he could die alone.
A further search led the daughter to a hotel in Chongming where her father had once worked. The manager there said he had seen Sun, but that he had since moved on.
Police said they have issued a missing persons alert and are following up on all leads.
