Man held for kidnapping boy, 5

A MAN has been charged with kidnapping a 5-year-old boy and demanding a 200,000 yuan (US$32,000) ransom that he said he needed to clear a gambling debt, Jiading District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

Li Yong is accused of snatching the child, identified as Boya, on January 3 from outside a convenience store run by the boy’s father, Huang Ping.

Huang was a regular customer at the vehicle repair shop run by Li, prosecutors said. Li allegedly tricked the child into a van on the ruse that his father was waiting for him inside the vehicle.

After driving away with the boy, Li called Huang and said he would hurt Boya if the father did not meet his ransom demand.

Li is alleged to have told prosecutors that he thought Huang could easily afford 200,000 yuan, which he said he needed to cover the debts he ran up after becoming addicted to gambling in amusement arcades.

Huang alerted the police and arranged to meet Li. The father told the kidnapper he was too anxious to drive and said he would arrive with his brother, who was actually an undercover police officer, prosecutors said.

Li agreed and at the meeting the police officer arrested him. Boya was released unharmed.
