Man held for puffing in Metro

Metro police have detained a man for smoking on the subway yesterday.

The man was seen smoking on a Line 9 train heading to the southwestern Songjiang District around 10:30am. Despite complaints by other passengers he refused to put off the cigarette until one of them took his picture and reported it to the Shanghai Metro police on their social networking service WeChat.

In the picture, the man is seen sitting in the train and smoking with two seats next to him empty.

“So what, you guys are Shanghainese, I do what I feel like to do and you are free to call the police,” the man yelled back at passengers who told him to stop smoking.

Smoking is banned on the Metro and operators are also considered banning eating and drinking on trains and platforms as well. A decision will be taken later after a series of public hearings.
