Man in charge of leaking plant in custody
The person in charge of a Shanghai cold storage plant where a liquid ammonia leakage killed 15 people and injured 25 others on Saturday morning has been taken into custody.
The Shanghai Weng’s Cold Storage Industrial Co Ltd, a seafood processing plant in Baoshan District, has also been told to suspend production after the accident, the Beijing Times reported.
Ten workers who suffered slight injuries and are being treated at Baoshan’s Dachang Hospital are in stable condition. They were able to walk on their own, an STV report said yesterday.
The newspaper also reported that a 19-year-old woman had lost her sight and suffered injuries in the lung and had burns on her body.
An initial investigation showed that a cap on the liquid ammonia pipeline system had fallen apart, resulting in the leak which affected workers who were packing shrimp in a production workshop.
The workers suffered internal burns after inhaling the highly corrosive fumes.
Some of those who died had severe facial burns.
Work safety authorities yesterday said the diameter and thickness of the leaky pipeline was 159 millimeters and 5 millimeters, respectively.
The construction of the workshop violated regulations and an investigation team was collecting evidence.
