Man jailed for causing residential gas leak

A MAN who damaged a natural gas pipe while trying to commit suicide was sentenced to three years in jail for vandalizing an explosive device, Pudong New Area People's Court said today.
The man, surnamed Lu, 38, created a gas leak in his mother's home through his action. No one was injured as his mother promptly discovered the leak and called the police.
The court said Lu became angry after his mother refused his request for money.
He then decided to attempt suicide by opening the natural gas valve with a wrench. He also removed a pipe linking the valve and gas meter, which caused the natural gas to leak out quickly.
Lu's mother found the leak immediately and called the police, which prevented people from being poisoned.
According to the court, the concentration of natural gas in the room reached 30 to 35 percent, exceeding the explosion limit of 5 to 15 percent.
Lu was caught by police at the scene and later confessed.
