Man jailed for ignoring court order to pay debt

A MAN who ignored a court order and refused to pay a debt worth more than 760,000 yuan (US$121,749) was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday by Huangpu District People's Court.
Prosecutors said Liu, 53, was ordered to return 1 million yuan with interest to a local company under a 2003 court order.
After the ruling, Liu returned 240,000 yuan but then claimed he was broke.
Between 2003 and early this year, the district had urged Liu to clear the debt many times, however, he changed his cell phone number and moved into rented apartments to hide from judges.
Prosecutors said Liu lived a lavish life and could have paid his debt.
The court heard Liu bought an apartment in Huangpu District for more than 4 million yuan in 2007 for his girlfriend and sold if for 6.7 million yuan in 2009.
After taxes and the outstanding portion of the mortgage were paid, Liu "earned" 3.55 million yuan. Instead of paying his debt, Liu spent the money on cars and daily expenses, prosecutors said.
Liu pleaded guilty in court yesterday and promised to pay the debt as soon as possible.
Liu told the court he had used the 3.55 million yuan to pay other debts.
Liu was caught in an apartment he was renting on April 22. He was charged with ignoring a court order, which has a maximum jail term of three years, plus fines.
