Man jailed for murder attempt

THE Jiading District People’s Court yesterday sentenced a 23-year-old man to six years in jail for trying to kill his former girlfriend.
The man, surnamed Zhang, was in a relationship with a girl nicknamed Xiao Ting but their parents were opposed to it. They eventually split up under pressure, but Zhang was keen to get back with her again. Xiao turned him down. On April last year, Zhang stabbed Xiao on the neck and breast several times and fled. She was rushed to the hospital and survived.
After stabbing her, Zhang tried to commit suicide but failed. He jumped into the river and then tried cutting his throat by the same knife. He then called the police and reported the “murder.”
Zhang paid 100,000 yuan (US$16,000) as compensation to Xiao and begged her forgiveness. Noting that Zhang had surrendered to the police, the court gave him a lighter penalty.
