Man jailed for ripping off brothel client

A man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for ripping off a brothel client by pretending to be a police informer, Minhang District prosecutors said today.

The convict surnamed Pei was accused of extorting 14,000 yuan (US$2,191) from the victim surnamed Zhou on September 4 last year when Pei and four others stopped a man who just came out of a prostitute salon around the corner of Gumei Road and Gudai Road.

The gang, pretending to work secretly for the police, told Zhou that he would be detained and fined at least 5,000 yuan if they reported him to the police. Pei also showed a fake police ID to Zhou.

Zhou was then led to a nearby supermarket where he bought two TV sets, a laptop and a mobile phone with his credit card for Pei.

Other four suspects were also detained on criminal charges.
