Man kills grandfather

A MAN who accidentally killed his 87-year-old grandfather in a conflict caused by the old man's remarriage has been charged with manslaughter, Pudong New Area prosecutors said yesterday.

The suspect Wang Gang and his parents objected to the old man marrying a domestic help for obvious reasons of family honor and shame.

The dead man, Wang Jianguo, lived with his son after his first wife died in 2008. Because the son rarely took care of the old man, Wang Jianguo hired domestic maids with his own money. But every time the son got rid of the maids.

According to the son Wang Dali, Wang Jianguo was looking for a wife, not a domestic help. The old man finally hired Chen Zhaodi, a 72-year-old migrant worker, last November. She, too, was driven out two months later.

Wang Jianguo called her back in February. He asked her to marry him, so she could live in his home. The marriage triggered a family conflict.

Wang Gang came to visit his parents on the night of February 28, which was the Lantern Festival.

When he saw Chen, he quarreled with his grandfather and then allegedly pushed him. His head hit a wooden box and he started bleeding. Chen was then ordered out of the house and she called the old man's sister.

When the sister hurried to Wang Jianguo's home, the old man was unconscious.

He died a few hours after being rushed to hospital.
