Man ‘planned to firebomb work’

A MAN has been detained by city police after trying to buy gasoline to allegedly firebomb his workplace.

Shortly before going to a gas station on Bao’an Highway in Jiading District, it is claimed that the man, whose name was not released, called police to say there would be explosions at his company office.

Police said he held a grudge against his company due to a wage dispute.

The man is said to have walked into the gas station on January 1 and asked for gasoline.

Staff refused to serve him as he didn’t have permission from his local police station — something required in China for anyone buying gas for uses other than for vehicles.

On being refused, the man produced a fruit knife and a 100 yuan (US$16) note and demanded staff sell him gas, it is alleged.

However, the staff called police and the man left.

He was found by police 10 minutes later in a patch of greenery 200 meters from the gas station.

According to police, the man said that before he went to buy gas he had called them and warned that there would be blasts at his company.

Presently, he has been charged with fabricating and intentionally spreading terrorism messages.

Investigations are continuing.
