Man wins US$7.5m on lottery
A LOCAL businessman this week became the city’s biggest ever winner on the national sports lottery, collecting 46.7 million yuan (US$7.5 million).
The man, surnamed Peng, on Friday bought 504 yuan worth of tickets for the thrice-weekly draw at a shop on Tianyaoqiao Road in Xuhui District.
He said that when he checked the winning numbers on Sunday, he felt he might have won something, but had no idea he’d landed the jackpot.
“I recognized some of the numbers as I was browsing online, but it was only when I looked carefully I realized I had them all,” he said.
Peng said he picked the numbers at random, but used a permutation to increase his chances of winning.
To win the jackpot in the state sports lottery, players must correctly select a group of five numbers and a pair of “bonus” numbers.
Last week’s jackpot was 15.43 million yuan, but as Peng also opted to treble his stake, he won 46.29 million yuan.
He also bagged a number of smaller prizes, which boosted his total winnings to 46.7 million yuan.
