Mansions art season will be sure to hit a high note
EXTRACTS from the operas “Carmen,” “The Lady of the Camellias” and “The Magic Flute” will be staged in the open-air at Sinan Mansions during its annual art season.
Four professional French opera singers will perform an adapted work that concentrates the three classic operas into a single drama on October 20 and 27 as part of the third “Modern Age Season” art event.
The art season aims to bring popular international art performances to locals at the historical site where many modern Chinese celebrities once lived, said Zheng Yi, brand director with Sinan Mansions.
Mobile opera performers take the street as the stage and closely interact with the audience.
During the performances, Charles Mesrines, from the Orchestre de Paris, will sing arias without artificial amplification along with three actresses.
The audiences will also be invited to sing harmony.
Apart from the condensed opera, a number of art performances and exhibitions from global artists will be staged for free in public spaces at the mansions early next year, along with a retrospective exhibition recalling Shanghai’s 1930s era.
Jiang Qinghong, a renowned video artist and curator has created eight light installations to display the development of Shanghai and the mansions between December 21 and January 1, 2019.
“The light show will focus on people rather than the architecture, to showcase the history and culture of the city,” Jiang said.
“I chose the Sinan Mansions because the place witnessed the development of the city, especially the combination of the East and West cultures.”
A Modern Sinan restaurant was opened yesterday at a villa at 505 Fuxing Road M. Opting for the Old Clerk Set meal, allows visitors to sample classic Shanghai-style Western food, such as borscht soup, deep-fried pork chops and salty toast. To have a meal at a Western restaurant was then deemed as a stylish event for an important occasion.
And a new exhibition at the Sinan Open Air Museum was launched yesterday. The history of the mansions is being displayed along a 30-meter-long street. It features an art exhibition composed of 26, 4-meter-tall pieces of glass.
More than 20 other exhibits including street lamps, ancient trees, red ground tiles and cobblestone walls are being displayed. People of all walks of life will be invited to serve as guides to visitors.
The mansions, covering about 50,000 square meters in Huangpu District, feature more than 50 historic garden villas in various architectural styles.
Many of them were former residences of celebrities such as the poet Liu Yazi (1887-1958) and Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961).
