Markets still selling cookware that failed check

PRODUCTS of Supor, a famous domestic cookware maker, are still on sale in local supermarkets after most of the company's sub-200 yuan cookware was found to contain excessive levels of manganese in a quality check by a market watchdog in northeast China.
Local supermarkets including Carrefour and Lotus told Shanghai Daily yesterday that they had not received a notice to remove Supor's cookware products from their shelves. The products were still on sale yesterday in their chains.
However, Zhao Jiaoli, secretary general of the Shanghai Commission of Consumers' Rights and Interests, warned local residents to be careful when buying and to wait for further investigation into the product by industry and commerce watchdogs.
Some stainless steel cookware products made by Supor, China's biggest producer of kitchen appliances, were found to be unqualified in an inspection. The listed products included milk pans, soup pots, steamers and electronic kettles.
Among the 56 samples, 37 were found to contain excessive manganese, the report said.
Manganese lowers production costs but adds risk as the cookware is more likely to get rusted and contaminate the food when cooking, Xinhua news agency reported.
The company responded to the report by insisting that its products were qualified and safe to use.
"We have asked for a second review on the quality inspection of our products," said Zhang Liping, a Shanghai-based official from Supor, who added that the company was still negotiating with the Harbin Industry and Commerce Administration, which continued to clear its products out of supermarkets.
Supor was founded in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, in 1994. It was the first listed cookware company in the country.
