Mayor ends term
LAWMAKERS yesterday approved the resignation of Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong, during the annual session of the Shanghai People’s Congress .
Yang, 63, was elected in 2013.
Yin Yicui, chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai People’s Congress, said: “Mayor Yang was hardworking and innovative in building Shanghai into a technology and innovation hub, pushing forward the development of the Free Trade Zone and improving residents’ wellbeing, among other efforts.”
Yang was a vice mayor in Shanghai from 2003 to 2012 and acting mayor for a month before assuming the mayor’s job. Before working as the vice secretary of the government from 2001, he had worked at Shanghai Airlines, the Shanghai Information Investment Co and other state-owned companies, as well as government institutions for economic studies and planning.
He graduated from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences with a master’s degree in economics. He is one of many government officials whose terms expire with this session of the Shanghai People’s Congress.
