Mercy shown to tragic parents

Prosecutors have dropped charges against a young couple whose baby died in a road accident while he was being held in his mother’s arms.

Minhang District People’s Procuratorate said they took the decision on humanitarian grounds as the crime was one of negligence and the victim was their son.

The father, surnamed Wu, a migrant worker from neighboring Zhejiang Province, was driving on Lianyue Road in Minhang District on December 4, 2012, when his vehicle was involved in a collision with a bus.

Wu said he had been trying to avoid a three-wheeler which had suddenly veered left.

The baby died from brain injuries.

Police determined Wu was to blame for the accident as he had not obeyed traffic light regulations.

A new law that makes child safety seats compulsory in the city will be introduced in March.
