Migrant punished for growing poppies
A MIGRANT worker who grew poppies in the hope of curing his leg disease, has been punished, Jinshan District authorities said yesterday.
All the 180 poppies have been uprooted along with another four planted by two other families, the comprehensive management office in Caojing Town told the thepaper.com.
The flowers were first noticed on May 7 by a local resident who reported to the office immediately.
Police officers and other government officials launched an investigation and found 180 poppies were grown near a house which was rented by a migrant worker.
Four other plants were discovered nearby. The owners of the plants said they had picked the seeds and planted them as the flowers looked beautiful. But it was not clear where the migrant worker got the seeds from.
The office briefed the families about the regulations over poppies.
The comprehensive management office did not reveal details of the penalty. But according to Chinese law, illegal cultivation of 3,000 poppies or more is punishable by at least five years in prison.
People growing fewer than 500 poppies are held in custody between 10 and 15 days and fined up to 3,000 yuan (US$483.56).
Poppy is used by Chinese herbalists and only allowed to be planted in limited medical plantations in China, rather than private fields.
It is not the first time that Shanghai authorities found illegally grown poppies in the city, according to website.
In 2013, a 78-year-old woman surnamed Fan was sentenced to three months suspended detention and fined 1,000 yuan for growing 820 poppies in Pudong New Area.
