Migrant worker recoups 60,000 yuan banknotes burnt in blaze

A MIGRANT worker who lost most of his and his colleagues savings in a fire has recovered part of the losses with the help of the local branch of Agricultural Bank of China.

Tragedy struck last Saturday when some dormitories at the construction site of a commercial real estate project in the Wujiaochang area in Yangpu District caught fire due to old electrical appliances.

The blaze spread quickly and Dong Zexue, the worker from Anhui Province, and his father could only save 73,000 yuan (US$11,774) from the total 157,000 yuan of the savings.

The money was the entire year’s savings of Dong and some of the other workers at the site.

Dong approached the Yan’an Road E. branch of the Agricultural Bank of China on Tuesday with more than 70,000 yuan torn and burnt banknotes.

It took about five bank tellers around five hours to finish counting and cashing work. Dong received a total of 60,100 yuan. Other notes were badly damaged by fire, the bank said.

Dong had planned to return to his hometown with his father for a family reunion for the Lunar New Year and had already bought the train tickets, but now he has canceled his trip back home after the construction site operator promised to help him recoup some of the losses, he said yesterday.
