Millions pay tribute on Qingming

MORE than 2.2 million people visited Shanghai’s cemeteries and columbariums on Qingming Festival yesterday to pay tribute to the deceased.

The total was down just over 11 percent compared to the same period last year, the city government said, with more residents choosing to visit on other days to avoid the crowds.

The festival, which is also known as tomb-sweeping day, is when Chinese people commemorate their loved ones by sweeping their tombs.

From March 25 to yesterday, the city recorded visits by 6.3 million tomb sweepers, 16.6 percent fewer than last year.

Many of the larger cemeteries provided shuttle buses to ferry visitors to and from Metro stations, a service used by 605,000 visitors since March 25, city officials said.

Police said the city’s expressways saw heavy traffic from early morning yesterday, leading to congestion on sections of the S20, G2 and G15 by 9am.
