Aunt killed missing baby found in washing machine, police say

The four-month-old baby boy, reported missing from his home since Sunday, was found dead in a washing machine at his own home last night.

The body was discovered by the mother, who opened the washing machine by chance at about 6:30pm yesterday.

The washing machine was lying unused for a long time.

The boy was found without clothes and wrapped in a plastic sheet. There was blood on the body, according to a security staff, who heard the mother’s cry and went to the place.

Songjiang Police said on its Weibo posting at 10pm late last night that the boy’s aunt had committed the murder.

They said they suspected the aunt, surnamed Lei, to be the murderer.

Lei admitted yesterday that she killed her nephew at 9am on Sunday and put his body in the washing machine.

Family disputes were reportedly the motive for the killing.

“They are migrants from Anhui Province who came to Shanghai to earn money and worked hard for their small business,” a neighbor told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

“The boy’s aunt had  three daughters, while her younger brother had a son.”

The baby was dismembered after Lei allegedly killed him, according to Shanghai Morning Post’s microblog.

A neighbor said when his body was found, his head was wrapped in a plastic bag and was hit by a blunt object.

Lei had told police that she killed the boy about 9pm on Sunday. The case is still under investigation.

The building where the family lived  has been cordoned off by the police.

“I saw him once in my store when his mother brought him over to buy some toys,” a shopkeeper near the building told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

“He was very cute and sweet.”

“We were all worried about him when he went missing ... the news of his death is very sad,” the shopkeeper said.

A middle-aged woman said it was cruel to kill a 4-month-old infant like that.

The family told police that the boy was missing from home on Sunday as his mother and the rest of the family members worked on their breakfast stall in Songjiang District.

The baby was sleeping in his stroller at home when his grandmother came to check on him at 9am and found him missing. Songjiang police said they searched nearby roads and checked surveillance videos and found nothing.
