Monthly minimum wage up by 200 yuan
SHANGHAI has raised the monthly minimum wage for full-time employees in the city from 1,820 yuan (US$290) to 2,020 yuan from tomorrow.
The hourly minimum wage for part-time employees, who work for less than four hours a day, or not more than 24 hours a week for a single employer, will go up from 17 yuan to 18 yuan.
The 200-yuan monthly wage hike will also be applicable to full-time staff of special public service programs like river cleaning, forestry maintenance, as well as those involved in community services for the aged and disabled people. They are currently paid around 1,940 yuan per month but will draw a minimum of up to 2,140 yuan from next month.
The minimum wage is “net income” and does not include an employee’s pension, unemployment, medical and other social insurance premiums, housing fund, overtime payment and other subsidies for night shift or work in special environment that might be harmful to health.
It was first introduced in 1993 when it was just 210 yuan per month to ensure basic quality of life for citizens with low incomes.
The minimum wage has increased almost every year since then after taking into accounts factors like living costs, consumer price index, employees’ average wage, economic development.
There was no hike in 2009 when the world was battling a severe global financial meltdown.
Shanghai’s minimum wage index was the highest in China until Shenzhen in Guangdong Province raised its minimum wage to 2,030 yuan per month and 18.5 yuan per hour from March 1.
