More police on street for G20 Summit
SHANGHAI police yesterday said it will step up foot patrols during the G20 Summit early next month in neighboring Hangzhou city.
“Currently, 60 to 70 percent of all patrol officers are on the streets, but we’ll raise the percentage to 80 to 90, and if necessary, 100,” said Rui Minghua, an official in charge of police patrols at Shanghai Public Security Bureau.
Over 4,000 officers patrol on the street every day.
In addition to increasing the number of officers on the streets, the bureau will ask many plainclothes officers to change into their uniforms “to deter criminals.”
Rui added that all officers will be equipped with shoulder lights for the same purpose.
The patrolling officers will also step up identity checks of “people behaving suspiciously,” especially in and around popular tourist spots and key buildings.
Behind the scenes, the city’s 5,800 police officers monitoring over 60,000 street surveillance cameras will “patrol” more intensively.
To combat terrorist threats, Shanghai’s 142 police tactical units will patrol alongside police SWAT teams, according to the bureau.
“With this effort we’re warning criminals who intend to victimize our citizens that they will be locked up,” Rui said.
