More time spent crossing Huangpu
IT takes commuters an average 20 minutes more to cross the Huangpu River during rush hours after the closure of Yan’an Road E. Tunnel from Pudong to Puxi since March 14, the Shanghai Transport Commission said yesterday.
About 70 percent of people who used the Yan’an Road tunnel to reach Puxi now use three other tunnels and Nanpu Bridge. Among them, 37 percent prefer Renmin Road Tunnel, the closest alternative to Yan’an Road E. Tunnel. About 14 percent use the Xinjian and Fuxing road tunnels.
The report said 10 percent drivers have ditched their vehicles and now use public transport to travel.
Major roads near the entrance and exit of the Renmin Road Tunnel, including Puxi’s Renmin Road, Henan Road, Pudong’s Dongchang and Pucheng roads, have seen up to 40 percent increase in vehicle numbers. Traffic congestions has also increased along Pudong’s Lujiazui Ring Road and Gaoyang Road.
Yan’an Road tunnel was one of the busiest tunnels under the Huangpu River, serving over 80,000 vehicles a day before it partially closed for repairs.
