Most fares dodged at high traffic stations
SHANGHAI’S busiest downtown metro stations are “hotbeds” for fare dodging, the city’s metro operator and a local civil group said yesterday.
Stations such as Xujiahui, Century Avenue, People’s Square, Jing’an Temple, Shanghai Railway Station and Nanjing Rd E. were the most prone to fare evasion among the city’s metro stops, according to a report from the Shanghai Spiritual Civilization Office and Shanghai Shentong Group.
Officials caught 14,242 fare dodgers between July 23 last year and March 26, the report mentioned. Among this group, 5,488 used borrowed senior citizen cards to avoid paying for metro travel. In Shanghai, residents over age 70 can ride public transport for free during non-peak times. In total, authorities collected 640,000 yuan (US$103,200) from dodgers during the period mentioned above.
Passengers caught not paying can be fined up to five times the price of their fare. Riders found using other’s senior citizen card can be fined 50 yuan.
Under current regulations, these cards are subject to confiscation, while their users can be blacklisted on the city’s credit rating system.
